Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
