A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
