The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

This latest announcement intensifies the continuing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its colors, that match those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism plus Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
