Denmark Establishes Special Watch System to Track President Trump Following Arctic Dispute
In a move inspired by fictional guards, the Danish foreign ministry has initiated a nighttime monitoring team—not to fend off fantasy foes, but to track Donald Trump while Copenhagen is asleep.
The night monitoring begins at 5pm local time each day and concludes with a report compiled at 7am, which is then distributed throughout government departments and relevant agencies detailing what was said and events taking place.
The role is understood to have been established in the wake of the diplomatic row involving Copenhagen and Washington over the Arctic island this spring, when the US president threatened acquiring control of the resource-rich territory.
Observers point out that this measure is among several examples of how Denmark's foreign policy and its civil service have had to adapt to the new reality of the second Trump administration.
A source close to the ministry stated, “It is fair to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time zone gap between Copenhagen and the US were a significant factor introducing this system in the spring.”
Rather than all staff having to immediately check their phones to catch up on updates from the US, the ministry said it had undertaken a coordinated approach to remain informed on Trump actions.
An expert, a ex- chief analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, stated that this development demonstrated, “as we have always known,” that the notion of the US as Denmark's largest and most important ally was dead. “Partnerships are founded on shared principles and a mutual view of threats,” he said. “The president shares neither of those with us and it can be said he lacks it with most Europeans.”
