Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A new term surfaced several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that initially championed togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
