Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Security crisis in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
