Background: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
