Lando Norris Wins Maiden F1 World Title in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Race Win.
In a display of nerveless driving, Lando Norris has sealed his debut F1 world title by achieving P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third place was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished first and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.
Norris executed exactly what was needed in an enormously intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of audacious passing maneuvers, with impeccable work from both himself and his team.
An Important Feat for Britain and The Team
With this his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the 11th British driver to achieve this. It concludes the team's drivers’ championship drought, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.
It represents a remarkable turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, since a nadir in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been spearheaded by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an operationally sharp outfit with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two Teammates
For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for a large part of the campaign, there was clear disappointment at faltering in the final third. Several of poor performances and some errors, including a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he emerges having demonstrated he is also of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.
Verstappen too had been brilliant to take the fight to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just two points behind.
Sealing the Deal with Clinical Precision
He secured his success with ruthless focus to win the championship that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the previous two rounds. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.
This represents no little accomplishment for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He stuck with the squad even during some difficult times, believing they would come good. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.
He has done a remarkable job to stick at his goal, maintaining his cool and confidence even when under the cosh. After losing the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from what he could.

The Title-Deciding Race
At the start, Verstappen held his lead through turn one, but the main contenders avoided contact. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.
This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his driving.
During the race, he made an incredibly bold move to overtake two cars at once, climbing to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, nearly completely off the track.
This moment was looked at by the race officials, with several impossibly tense laps elapsing before a time penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his title fight.
Contrasting Fortunes
As Norris became the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with enthusiasm but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a podium. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will look to reset over the off-season.
