The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in a generation are being described as a "major milestone" in the fight against superbug strains of the infection, according to health experts.

An International Public Health Issue

Cases of gonorrhoea are increasing globally, with data suggesting more than 82 million infections per year. Notably increased rates are reported in the African continent and countries within the WHO's Western Pacific region, which spans from Mongolia and China to New Zealand. Across England, cases have hit a all-time high, while infection numbers across Europe in 2023 were three times higher compared to the rates from 2014.

Zoliflodacin stemmed from a unique collaborative effort for medication research. The non-profit organisation Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership worked alongside the drug firm Innoviva to develop it.
