Over two thousand Exploited Children and Unaccompanied Minor Asylum Seekers Disappeared from British Local Authorities’ Custody

Based on public records figures, in excess of 2,000 minors who were either trafficked or arrived in the UK alone to claim asylum disappeared from social services’ care during the past year.

Analysis Reveals Concerning Figures

A report titled “Until the Danger Ceases” submitted FoI requests to youth protection agencies across the UK nations.

Data from 135 government bodies showed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five children categorized as having been victimized or believed to be trafficking victims, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were recorded as vanished.

A total of one hundred forty-one local authorities responded to inquiries about unaccompanied minor refugees in their care, who amounted to 11,999 children. Of these, 1,501 (thirteen percent) were listed as disappeared.

High Risk for Endangered Young People

The analysis, published by non-profit organizations, cautions that these categories are at “serious threat” of going missing from care.

A number of trafficked children in the UK are UK nationals while additional cases are from overseas.

They are likely to have been subjected to either sexual exploitation or illegal activities misuse, for example by organized crime groups.

Structural Deficiencies in Protection

Local authorities have a statutory duty to secure and help trafficked and unaccompanied children under child protection frameworks. However, there is no publicly available federal data on the issue.

The recent study cautions that elements such as uncertain legal status can increase young people’s susceptibility to additional danger, placing them at significant risk of re-exploitation and renewed exploitation.

Demands for Intervention

It says there is a “continuing and significant failure” in safeguarding and calls on municipal councils and law enforcement to guarantee compliance with proper procedures.

The researchers also urge the Department for Education to ensure all exploited and lone minors can receive appropriate accommodation that prevents being re-victimized.

Lodging Problems

Beginning from late 2021, municipal councils have been mandated to ensure that all looked-after children under sixteen are located in facilities that give protection.

However, 16- and 17-year-olds can still be placed in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not give daily supervision.

Under special conditions, these teenagers can be placed in shared facilities, caravans, temporary shelters, boats, or communal living with unrelated adults.

Specialist Reactions

“This report underscores the risk trafficked and unaccompanied children face. It continues to be difficult to grasp why these young people continue to be failed. They are consistently let down by the structures meant to help them, whilst being penalized by policies that worsen the problem.”
“Every child ought to have shielded and cared for, yet exploited and lone minors are consistently let down by the very systems designed to safeguard them.”

Administration Statement

A government spokesperson stated: “The current administration took over a children’s social care system unable to satisfy the needs of the state’s most endangered young people.

“Our major children’s wellbeing and schools bill is the most substantial restructuring of youth welfare in a long time, delivering on our mission to sever the connection between young people’s circumstances and their later achievements.”

The spokesperson stated further that the steps include enhancing the availability of care placements, improved communication, requiring the formation of collaborative minor protection units in every area, and introducing a new duty on collaborators to routinely incorporate schools and youth facilities in their safeguarding arrangements to help avoid children falling through the cracks.
