"We had an abundance of exceptional talents," says former City colleague Ben Knight. "Having such a high number of top, top footballers, you just feel like you're never going to lose."

"Receiving a City upbringing and then adding your own flair on it and being able to play with freedom has definitely helped Cole," added Knight. "He was the kind of player that needed a bit of liberty to be at his most effective... He's gone to Chelsea as the main man; he can go where he wants and get on the ball and do what he wants. It's worked out."

The primary aim at Manchester City's academy is unambiguous: to produce players for their own elite team. "The hardest thing is they're multi-million pound players and you're trying to take their position—that is incredibly difficult. It's almost virtually impossible."

His personal path almost concluded early at City, with certain at the club doubting whether the then slight 16-year-old had the required qualities. "He had like a mad growth spurt," Knight recalled. "And then Covid happened and he trained with the first team and it was a case of: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's just ridiculous.'"

Being a Manchester City graduate carries a distinct prestige, and the standard of player produced is repeatedly high. Smart recruitment and excellent coaching help to maintain City's position ahead and make them the admiration of competitors.
