The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
