The people of Israel mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
People have assembled throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war administration of the region
Citizen Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area said another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics reported.
