Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located many other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
