When Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing around the suburb.
“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear something was wrong.
While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every part of you would signal you to run in the reverse way.
“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort running.”
A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Tragedy
The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous the injured.
Local Reaction and Assistance
Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the violence transforming into a temporary hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including entering the water to assist people needing help.
In the days after the tragedy, messages of support were shared. One post conveyed gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.
The group of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “processing what happened”.
“We are grateful all for your kind words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the organization stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those impacted.”
Local Government Commendation
Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting commenced until late that evening.
“There have been so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a local official.
“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned coastlines safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.
“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
